Environmental protection and the efficient use of resources are increasingly important considerations. Even in the healthcare sector, we need to use water and energy as economically as possible. For many years now our customer CWS has been thinking about closed-loop cycles in order to conserve resources and has firmly anchored sustainable business practices in a circular business model under the motto “Think Circular”. This is because a truly circular economy is the only way to successfully tackle the global challenges we face in terms of resource scarcity and climate change, and it is the only way to reduce the health impacts of these trends. This philosophy underpinned the latest project with CWS – expanding the company’s Brehna site with new washroom and finishing machines from JENSEN to increase their production of flatwork linen.
The goal: provide a fully automated solution from feeding to the discharge point
CWS Healthcare, a Solution Area (or business division) of CWS, provides a reliable supply of hygienic textiles to outpatient care facilities and care homes as well as emergency services and fire brigades, including everything from workwear to end-to-end professional laundry processing. The “Think Circular” philosophy was extended to their newest location at the beginning of May, giving them a total of six facilities throughout Germany.
Brehna is located north of Leipzig – a journey of just under 45 minutes by car – and is right alongside the A9 motorway between Munich and Berlin in the central German transport hub of Leipzig-Halle. CWS Healthcare’s new site now covers the federal states of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Berlin and Brandenburg.
With their new expansion, they focused on equipment that specifically for the processing of flatwork linen, including washing and finishing solutions. They had strict objectives that were focused on efficiency, automation, and production capacity.
“Thanks to the good cooperation between our factories in the JENSEN-GROUP and the right planning and logistics, we succeeded in going into operation as planned,” reports Regional Sales Manager Andreas Kirchhof. “We remained in close contact throughout, from the initial consultation through to commissioning, to ensure everything went smoothly. Shortly before live operations began, we trained the entire laundry team on the new JENSEN machines to ensure they hit the ground running.”
The ideal solution for washing and finishing flatwork linen
The new JENSEN UniQ 60-18 tunnel washer – a highly flexible machine with an internal energy and water recovery system – consistently washes the laundry using the water change process, i.e. in standing baths. The certified washing procedures are pre-programmed and automatically applied in the process control system, ensuring that each batch remains in its own bath through the main wash and is given a specific dose of detergent, liquor temperature and water level based on the program and batch weight. The FlexRinse process further reduces the consumption of fresh water and also follows the “Think Circular” approach, as it is based on cycle where process water is optimally recovered to conserve energy and resources while still ensuring the best washing results.
The new JENSEN ExQ 60 HD water extraction press ensures that the water is extracted reliably, efficiently and hygienically. The press is equipped with TopDrain, a closed drainage system made of stainless steel which conveys the liquor to a separate, easily accessible recovery tank after extraction. This reliably avoids standing water and creates extremely hygienic conditions. The extraction channels of the TopDrain system also have larger cross-sections, meaning the liquor is drained away even faster and the press cake has even less residual moisture. In addition, the stainless steel drainage plate is easy to remove for cleaning. The automatic fill level monitor for the press cushion ensures consistently excellent water extraction results. If the fill level is too low, it is immediately corrected using the AutoRefill function, which also significantly extends the service life of the press cushion. The loading process into the tank is monitored in two ways – by a photocell and a patented strain gauge – to ensure a safe and reliable process.
The subsequent five JENSEN DT 60 Plus transfer dryers then dry the textiles gently but effectively. The InfraCare infrared control system optimises the drying process with infrared sensors and bases the drying time on the linen’s temperature. Depending on the type of laundry being processed, this saves a lot of energy, notably speeds up the drying time and thus improves cost-effectiveness and productivity.
The new KliQ Plus feeder builds on the DNA of JENSEN’s feeders. It ensures optimum feeding capacity and quality for all types of flatwork linen. The use of pivotable spreading clamps enables a first-class infeed and high capacity. The unique spreading clamps receive the items from the feeding stations and transfer them horizontally to the vacuum beam, which ensures a straight front edge. The KliQ Plus offers a host of other new features and options which enable it to spread and feed flatwork faster while maintaining optimum infeed quality.
The new JENSEN Kalor S 1200 flatwork ironer sets new standards in terms of evaporative capacity and speed for ironing with a deep chest. Enhanced energy efficiency leads to a reduction in overall energy consumption, allowing a greater proportion of the input energy to be effectively utilized for evaporating water. As a result, the JENSEN Kalor S 1200 flatwork ironer can iron more pieces per hour, allowing more production per square meter (square foot) ultimately saving both energy and space inside the laundry. Every JENSEN flatwork ironer comes with a built-in finishing line control system, which enables the feeder and folder to be connected easily. The flatwork ironer distributes the power supply to all devices in the finishing line.
The Classic high-speed folder is a fast, simple and reliable combination folder. It creates one or two lateral folds and a maximum of three cross folds in one line, depending on which options are chosen. The Classic has been designed as a fast, mechanically sturdy and reliable folder for creating standard half folds in items of laundry and is ideal for processing flatwork.
A state-of-the-art site offering the best working conditions
“We’re delighted to have a state-of-the-art site in Brehna. With our investment we are responding to the market conditions and have created a site offering the best possible working conditions for our staff. We focus on our customers’ needs and are meeting these with cutting-edge technology and associated construction measures,” explains Markus Schad, Chief Executive Officer CWS Cleanrooms.
The CWS Group offers everything relating to commercial services – from hygiene to protective clothing. CWS Healthcare can be found throughout Germany and currently has six healthcare laundries in Warburg, Birkenfeld, Bad Oldesloe, Creussen, Malbergweich and Brehna. The aim is for the Brehna site to become a central production facility in future. We thank Brehna for their trust in JENSEN technology.
