Espresso Insights: Three Questions Over Coffee with Mads Andresen, Chief Innovation Officer

In this first edition of Espresso Insights, we sat down for a quick coffee with Mads Andresen to talk about the digital transformation of industrial laundries. From automation to ESG, here's what he had to say.

1. How does JENSEN define digitalization in laundries today?

“We don’t define digitalization for our customers — we define it with them. Digitalization in industrial laundries isn’t one-size-fits-all: Laundries determine their own degree of digitalization, ranging from individual automated processes to fully integrated systems. For total cost of ownership (TCO) improvements, a higher level of digitalization is needed, and JENSEN has been delivering on that for years Our approach is simple: what can be automated, we will automate, because our machines and software are built to adapt and evolve alongside each laundry's specific needs."

2. What is the current status?

“JENSEN has already made significant strides in automation and AI-driven processes, like in the automated soil sort systems that have been in operation for nearly a decade, with over 170 references worldwide. Extensive data collection capabilities exist at machine level, and current pilot projects focus on leveraging this data to improve performance and interconnect systems.

One solution already connects soil sort data with the Metricon system to optimize capacity. But that’s just the beginning, there are many more use cases with even higher value waiting to be unlocked.

Sustainability is also at the heart of digital progress. JENSEN supports its clients in reaching their ESG goals, with a special focus on improving health and safety through robotics and automation and accelerating energy-efficient technologies. I would also like to highlights progress in customer interfaces, such as the 24/7 webshop and the growing importance of digital service tools. Service is all about uptime, and digitalized service contracts and smarter communication processes help us ensure our customers get the most out of their machines.”

3. What will a laundry look like in a few years with regard to digitalization?

“Looking ahead, the laundry of the future will be more automated, data-driven, and connected. We envision less manual work and more remote control, better benchmarking tools for laundry groups using shared data, as well as smarter, interconnected systems. What we mean are not just smart machines, but smart laundries. We see ourselves as bridge builders, connecting machines and connecting laundries. With over a decade of experience in applying AI to single machines, the next step is orchestrating the entire laundry process. We want to be the DJ of the laundry, reading the room, adjusting in real time, and creating harmony across all systems”
