Energy Savings in laundries

Energy is no longer an endless resource that can be consumed with no limits. All economic sectors are faced with shortages, drops in performance, and record high prices. Fortunately, modern equipment and new approaches support laundries in recapturing energy.

Tunnel Washers
Save energy by conserving water: a tunnel washer makes better use of water than any washer extractor. If a laundry requires as little as 1.6 l of fresh water per kg of linen, less water needs to be heated.
Tunnel washers with a heat exchanger get a second benefit: With a heat exchanger, the heat from outgoing waste water is transferred to incoming fresh water. As the temperature of the overall process water increases, and less steam is required in the main wash. The temperature of the waste water will be around 20° C (instead of 55° C), and the fresh water temperature will be at 38° C.
A tunnel washer that runs one full shift per day will save 27% on steam consumption per year.

Dryers
Adjusting the drying cycle is a low-hanging fruit with a big impact.
An infrared control regulates the energy supply and avoids linen damage from over-heating. This InfraCare control unit continuously measures the exact temperature of the load. Only the necessary thermal energy is provided, reducing energy consumption. In JENSEN dryers, an infinitely variable air recirculation guarantees a highly efficient, batch related drying process, and frequency controlled fan units optimize the airflow.
“RecoCross” Heat exchangers ensure that the energy of hot exhaust air is used to pre-heat the incoming fresh air. With a heat exchanger, the exhaust air goes down from 100-110° C to 60-65°C, saving up to 15% of the heating energy.
We recommend installing an automatic central lint collector to make sure the filter is clean, and the dryer maintains the evaporation rate.

Ironers
When it comes to flatwork ironers, chest heated ironer has proven to be much more energy efficient than cylinder heated solutions. Product development is going fast: The latest JENSEN gas ironers from 2022 with flexible chest reduce the C02 footprint by as much as 19% compared to JENSEN gas ironer models from 2020 – which is achieved thanks to many factors, including a new triple-pass boiler which reduces the flue gas temperature by 20° C. When comparing the flexible chest ironers from JENSEN with cylinder heated ironers of other brands, the evaporation capacity and energy savings by the JENSEN ironers is much higher. The benefits of energy savings can be easily calculated as JENSEN gas ironers can evaporate one kilo of water with only 1,1 kW.
We also recommend a waxing alarm to make efficient use of electrical power, as well as conducting regular service checks to increase productivity. Fast Temperature changes are faster thanks to the low weight of the flexible chest: Neither time nor energy will be wasted.
JENSEN ironer chests are made of carbon steel, which carbon steel has a heat conduction four times higher than stainless steel. Carbon steel also guarantees lower friction, hence less energy is used to drive the rolls.

Technology helps to save energy
The newest generation of laundry solutions are highly productive machines. With higher capacities, more tons of linen are processed per hour, and the machine consumes less energy per kilo of linen processed. Design, construction, and the use of high-performance components, such as motors in the highest energy efficiency class, are a guarantee for energy-efficient laundry machines.
